Soul of a wanderer

I have contemplated the theory that I have the soul of a hippie. On days I just want to pack up and leave, irrespective of the day, time and state of affairs in the Republic of Kalra. But apart from the whimsical thoughts too and more on point of what I choose to put on my back, I have enjoyed sporting a look or two where I don at least one element of a very bohemian look, even if not more. This look, however, is entirely another story. A shoot I modelled for, for my photographer's fashion school project, I shared one of the images from my shoot here and the response propelled me into sharing the entire look with you. Its whimsical, yet practical. Hippie, yet mature. It is an alter ego which I best describe as 'a wanderer' that surfaces occasionally and mostly when I decide I cannot flow with the mainstream anymore.

Back to the roots

Now is a good time as any to go back to the roots. With design mavens like Sanjay Garg for Raw Mango, Vaishali S, Wendell Rodricks teaching us a thing or two about going back to the Indian textiles, the design scene in India looks richer than ever before. The saree in khadi, matka silk, chanderi and other hand spun textiles is suddenly the new cool option. Not to say that it ever was not. India's design history has always been rich and our resources are never ending. The man power is talented and it is phenomenal what a little tapping into it can do. But these designers with interesting cuts and drapes are making these options seem so much more appealing to everyone. I for one am sold.
To the outfit now. With an attempt to do a half drape saree, this look is the more earthy and unkempt one amongst the two that we shot for my friend's college project. The half saree look can be achieved this Diwali even without the complications of the whole nine yards. Take a cue from the photos and you definitely run the chance of upping the style quotient at that coveted Diwali party. ;)

Players gonna plaid

The tartan patterned plaid shirt is like hot chocolate on a nippy day. Comforting, yet never goes out of style. Plaid isn't just confined to the kilts of the hot Scottish men or the sexy school girl outfit *cough* and here at FTLOFAOT, I give you my own version of the plaid look. In this weather where I was seemingly undecided about whether it was chilly enough for a jacket or warm enough to just float about in my maxis, I decided to do a little cool layering with my dependable custom made black maxi dress and the plaid shirt. Its certainly hipster since the floaty maxy and the shirt both exude a very devil-may-care vibe, but hey, turns out the devil does care and teams up a leopard print clutch against the plaid shirt. Hair, Brooklyn-ish gold hoops and black multi-strapped flat sandals could easily be classified as norm core but thats the thing, I always do norm core in parts and elements.
This was my outfit for Day 4 of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and the photographs are courtesy the lovely couple behind The Fashion Flite.

Glamour Untamed

Any reader who has been around for the turn of the century on my blog will know how I am not a very 'winter person', so to speak. Sure, trench coats, double breasted jackets, bombers, cardigans, cashmere have their charm and as an ardent lover of fashion, it is almost impossible to be oblivious to it. However, I tend to get lazy. My best friends are my tartan PJs. My beanie over ruffled hair fails to embarrass me in public. Simply put, it is just too cold to care.
So before it gets too cold for me to stop caring, let me unleash a can of glamour untamed on this blog. This should not be too anti climatic since the outfit in itself is all about the glamour of the current era. Lacy camisoles, a chunky necklace in gold emblazoned with powerful gems, a little black skirt with the handiwork of glass beads all across forming geometric patterns, the perfect cherry coloured platformed oxfords and the warmest swankiest chunky cardigan in a slatey shade with hints of ecru.
If this doesn't sound like winter wonderland to you, then maybe this visual revelry of an outfit that I came up with will make you a believer.
The skirt comes from the hands of the immensely talented designer who runs her label Thats Thefft, an outfit from which you saw here on my blog. The necklace is crafted by the hands of designer Ankita Tiwari whose label Aé-Teē has been spotted on every Queen Bee of Tinsel Town. If there is a jewellery label that just gets me, it is definitely this.
Clarks India's latest campaign, Shoe Diaries with Rina Dhaka is what really got me to style these uber cool shoes. As one of the bloggers collaborating with Clarks on this really cool campaign, this is my ShoeDiary. You can head to ShoeDiaries and find out everything about this and enter their contests to win exciting prizes.

Style Saturday with Marks & Spencer

Ever since I can remember, the urge to style people, influence people's shopping decisions has been my idea of fun. A little fashion nerdy as it sounds, it is a knack to be able to gauge and make informed decisions with people as far as their personal shopping needs go. Marks and Spencer India invited me to be their stylist for a day at their ginormous South Extension-II, Delhi store as a part of their Style Saturday campaign. A fun idea, this involved me being placed as a stylist at their store for an entire day and taking that opportunity to style all the customers who came in to shop that day. I had the good fortune of meeting a quite a few of my readers and other fun customers who are now opening their minds to making more adventurous choices in terms of fashion. The format of this fun activity was such that it involved a lot of conversation, the process of shopping and my advice to them regarding the same, a photo booth and cute Marks and Spencer giveaways which the shoppers loved. Whats not to love about a stylist's day which progresses like that.
The trends doing the rounds in the new collection at Marks and Spencer India include, houndstooth prints, floral prints, cowl necks , capes and my winter favourites; chunky knits. A whole array of leggings and treggings await you if they are your winter favourites. I particularly like the shawl-cape trend that the new collection taps into. Definitely a shape shifter as it covers your body flaws with the utmost elegance.
If you are in Mumbai, then get set for the coming weekend as Style Saturday comes to Mumbai. Watch their page for more details.

Mash up

Delhi is finding it extremely hard to make up its mind. The second week of December is here and we are still not witnessing the level of cold that we are now accustomed to. I am unsure of whether thats a good thing. Mostly because I find it hard to pick pieces to create outfits appropriate for the weather. For this particular day, I found solace in creating a mash up that would put the nomads to shame. I picked this red collared vest with a zippered front from a little stall in a market. To me it stands for Indian fashion at its best. Colourful thread embroidery with a hint of mirror work. I decided to pair it with a black tulle midi skirt and my combat boots with crochet. It was delightful how the outfit almost seamlessly came together, even though spanning across different trends of the world. Its easy to create a mash up of all your favourite trends if you believe its something that complements your personal style.
This mash up is all about the bass, no treble. (Pear-shaped Indian women unite.)

Joan Didion for Céline

$

0
Think Céline and a vivid image of the haute monde toting the classic luggage tote pops into your head and when you delve into this chain, you think of every imaginable synonym for chic as you think of the Céline aesthetics. Céline was not always this ‘thinking woman’s’ label as it stands today. Safe to say, those of us tracking the movements of the fashion players in the world would all agree that Céline is as it stands, an extension of Phoebe Philo’s creative genius. Be it her take on fashion as ‘back-to-reality’ and utilitarian or the time for Spring, 2015 when Céline gave us an alternate ditzy floral sartorial reality, Phoebe Philo’s vision makes Céline, what the American Vogue calls, ‘achingly cool’.
What makes Phoebe Philo so dauntingly cool to me is probably a thought for another day but it has something of an adhesive quality to what makes Joan Didion the coolest poster girl for Céline.
I must confess that I have not read any of Joan Didion’s vivifying works. I had, however, heard of her for a variety of reasons, be it her literary prowess with works like ‘The year of magical thinking’ which she wrote pondering over the very last syllable of death or ‘Slouching towards Bethlehem’ or her stint at Vogue in the ‘50s where her piece on morality rightly fitted into the glamour two page spread in Vogue. It is something to laud a writer for if the masses of a country are swayed towards adopting writing as a career choice only because her writing. Her writing, which is known to be so composed and yet so detailed, about her, yet so universally understandable. With her ‘70s sweater dresses and reed thin figure, Joan Didion was the original cool writer chick of America. I could not possibly justify the shock I felt when I realized that for the longest time, there existed no documentary on the life and work of this understated cerebral writer chick. The one that her nephew shot is possibly one of the pieces that gives voice to this beautifully wrinkled face that is not afraid to bask in the beauty of ageing. Is that what makes Joan Didion the right face for Céline? The fact that ageing is a natural process which few manage to process ever so gracefully and with the utmost maturity. Just like say, Céline was resuscitated when Phoebe Philo joined the ranks and tapped into the label’s subterranean charm. Maybe it is the fact that someone as definitively cool as Phoebe could have always idolized a Joan Didion and finally decided to give this body of work, that is Céline, a much-needed intellectual powerhouse makeover. Could it be that the cutting edge precision with which Phoebe has devised the strategy and designs for Céline are much in tune with the obsessive writing ways of Joan Didion. Much lesser known facts about Joan include that her pieces work around character count, not word count and if that was not enough, she checks all her pieces multiple times against the transcript.
What is it about Joan in the photograph for the ad campaign as shot by Juergen Teller that makes me see Céline in almost a new light? I have always believed that the cool, sophisticated, structured yet fluid designs of Céline are possibly a part of every fashionista’s virtual pinboard. But maybe the unwavering, sometimes-harsh million-dollar industry that is fashion, sometimes glosses over even the smartest, most inventive design. Joan brings to Céline, not a gloss but a matte finish, which only comes with the wisdom of a figure like Joan. Joan’s ways of absolute nonchalance to the waves that she is creating in the fashion world are much on the lines of Phoebe Philo’s who has always been known to eschew the press for as long as she can.
Old is cool. More so when old is beautiful and blissfully unaware of it. We might be heading towards a trend of reviving the old in the name of fashion (Read: Dolce & Gabbana Spring-Summer ’15 campaign), but it is hard to ignore the fact that style is eternal.
My money is on this one.

Hello old friend

Another new year, another set of resolutions ready to be broken. I have almost detached myself from the blatant fraudulence where I set my bar for resolutions so high, that its nigh impossible to ever get there. Instead, I have come up with a list of keywords that I am going to make my go-to responses, everytime life throws lemons at me that I cannot make lemon meringue out of.

  • Travel- On a very long car journey, left quite happily to my thoughts, I came to the realisation that I did not move beyond some seven big cities last year. I have never been very big on traveling but this year is my year of change and I am going to try and travel as much as I can and as far as I can. No strict rules, just plenty of wanderlust and pixie dust in my pocket.
  • Run- As much as I would like to make it a masala bollywood plot and announce that I plan to run away, that sadly is not the case. For anyone who follows me on instagram would know that I have recently taken to this wonderfully cathartic activity and this year will be about a lot of running and a lot of really stylish running gear. I call it positive reinforcement.
  • Shanti- I have not gone back to yoga class for a long while but the simple chant of 'Om Shanti' goes a long way in remembering that anything beyond your control is not your headache. Keep the ego out, temper in check, negativity out, positivity in. This is probably the hardest, but as the sagacious would say, good things never come easy in life.
On that note, here is the first blog post of the year where I donned my chunky, earthy sweater dress and gold kicks.

Casual chic winter

Spring Couture, 2015 is here and while I might not be sitting obsolete to the whole world and drowning myself in one show after another, I have been picking and choosing favourites. Credit where credit is due, I have never been a big fan of Armani Prive but with this collection with recurring bamboo shoot print, I believe what I saw was an immense amount of maturity and sophistication in a collection that at some level drew inspiration from Asia. Then there was my all time red carpet favourite Elie Saab with a throwback all the way to his childhood circa '60s and those beautiful tulip motif appliqué tulle and point d'esprit gowns. There wasn't a gown he made that I did not love.
Moving on from that little monologue about what caught my fancy, more about the outfit. A little background would help. In a world where everyone and in many cases, every outfit is trying to outdo the other, sometimes it is a huge relief to be able to look stylish in the most minimally styled look. An Italian yarn sweater in a grey that matches the sky on most winter days in Delhi with an inky faded ripped jeans is the all-time favourite of every cool Pinterest poster girl. Of course it would never be complete without a dash of leopard print, some dusty pearls and block heels with peeping toes. Remember to wear little or no make up and you could actually end up looking as homeless as me. But thats just a story for another day.

JOFW – Season 2: Day 2 of Auditions – Models, Hair Stylists & Makeup Artists

A blown up height chart had been set up. Our personnel stood equipped with his tools to get the proportions of each entrant. The registration forms began flying off the counter as hoards of 6 feet aboves (well mostly) started trickling in for the model casting.

Day two of the JabongOnline Fashion Week looked as exciting as it felt. While the casting tees and tank tops were doled out for the applicants, our haut monde jury sauntered in in their Saturday best. While the jitters (literally and figuratively given the city’s temperature) ran high amongst the modeling hopefuls backstage, the jury put their game face on to judge these boys and girls. India’s fashion choreography mammoth Lubna Adams directed questions at the aspirants that definitely required more than just their towering height. The over powering theme for the male models could have easily been, ‘why so beard’, given that more than 90% of the final models sported that look (trend alert, boys).

Nervous giggling and daunting ‘take-off-the-heels-and-show-us-your-real-height’ tests later, a pool of estrogen-fueled models were geared up to work hard to come out at the top in the final show in February.
With an experience of 26 years in the modeling industry, NoyonikaChatterjee is every bit from the tiny pool of India’s first few dusky super models. “Competition is so essential and Jabong Online Fashion Week does just that; create competition to improve the quality of professionals in the industry”, she says with the poise of a true diva. We nod in agreement when she points out that a good ramp model is ‘a lot more than just beauty’.

The make up and hair artist aspirants were up next. VidyaTikari, one of India’s finest make up artists spoke to us about how she would ‘teach an artist so long as they were willing to give everything to this art’. The aspirants giddy with the excitement of being judged by Vidya were seen hanging on to each word as she explained what was expected out of them.Missing bobby pins and dollops of colour later, the final looks were sashayed across in front of our jury.

Auditions were never so fun.

For the love of India Circus

After a sojourn in France and a short stop in Spain, coming back home was kind of hard. Not that I don't love home and coming back to all things Indian. I do. But a holiday full of old town charm mixed with the Parisian city life, sparkle and wine, petit dejeuner instead of breakfast and spanish sangria instead of water, is kind of hard to match up to. With my kitty full of these fun, colourful, contemporary pieces from India Circus, I decided to take a little picnic down to Lodhi Gardens. What better way to mix all things reminiscent of cobbled European pathways with quirky Indian elements than a picnic with French nicknacks served right in my India Circus. I have always been hugely impressed by the great quality of their fun, kitsch products and the fact that everything still manages to be pocket friendly. Unless you decide to ransack their entire website, I guess.
A sunny Delhi morning, a backdrop of every possible colour created by a bed of flowers, a damp green bed of grass and a basket full of cupcakes and croissants; definitely adds up to my picnic recipe.
Never a dull moment with my copy of The Silmarillion to give me company for some downtime.

Ten things to do(or not do) in Paris

$
0
0
We all have that one city we are completely besotted with ever since we can remember. That one city which probably constructs the perfect vision in your head, every time you take a moment to conjure a picture of it. It never mattered that you had actually not seen the city. Until you actually do. You can read a billion travelogues and you can inundate under the effect of a billion lists, it is never going to feel like enough preparation. Sometimes, knowing your basics is enough and the rest as they say can be 'winged'. I have not been an ardent traveller as much as I would like to be. That could be the reason it took me twenty five years to plan this holiday and plant my feet in the city of my dreams. Eiffel Tower always sparkled with the lights of a thousand glittering bulbs in my head. It was always windy and my hair always managed to stay right where I intended them to be by the end of the day, in my imagination. The 'creme glacee' as the French would say, always looked perfect in my head maybe even with a sprinkle of edible glitter. Women in the most effortless kind of street style were always running asunder and I wouldn't even want to get to those dapper French men. If I could put it in the most succinct manner, Paris is all that and more. It is not just a board straight out of Pinterest, it is that board with a hint of reality. Parisians don't poop rainbows and everything is not topped with a dollop of glitter or cream (it could be if you cared no less about your health) but it is dreamy, beautiful and instils a sense of revelry in you that no other place does. The architecture of France, which includes Pre-Roman, Romanesque, Medieval and other periods that it pans over, is so magnificent that every possible cliche on the list of touristy sights, is worth going to. In order to save you the hassle of compiling tips from twenty blogs, below is a list of ten things to do(or not to do) to have a fun short trip to Paris. It is not all inclusive and does not include the complete list of places to go to or what to eat, but it touches upon important matters:

  1. Get ready to walk. And walk a lot. Paris is a city best seen on foot because you never know what you might find in the lane adjoining your hotel. A lot of areas can be covered on foot over a few hours. And if you are as enthusiastic as we were, you will probably walk half the city and back. Comfortable shoes are a priority, as are comfortable bags.
  2. Le Marais should not be missed. This might be driven by the fact that we decided to stay in that area but I can safely say that every possible element of the Parisian culture can be found in this area. You can walk down a lane and buy wholesale jewellery or walk down another and find it lined with the cutest cafes. You could buy every possible variety of flowers (including those fabulous tulips) and you could also grab a drink at a bar where the locals hang at the same time. It is brimming with cute little boutiques and ample of street style.
  3. If you, like me are a 'need-to-see-everything' kind of a traveller then a word of caution: Do not spend an entire day at the Louvre, unless art is the purpose of your travel. There are many other museums and art galleries that you could see in the remainder of the day, which include Musee D'Orsay. Finding the most coveted paintings and sculptures at the Louvre is not hard, given that there are audio commentaries available along with some research that you could do on what to see before you actually go there.
  4. Eat and drink where the locals do. We found this little bar called Industrie in our locale of Le Marais and I believe that the fun, French evening out vibe there remains unparalleled to any of our touristy cafe jaunts. Ask the locals, see where they go for a stiff drink or a portion of their beef tartar and live a day in their life. Another must visit, albeit a little expensive is Les deux Magots at Rue de Bonaparte which incidentally, I did first find through some food blogs.
  5. The longest walk and definitely worth all the hype is the walk to Montmartre. There are buses and trains that drop you to the plateau landing and there upwards is the most beautiful walk, where in you will cross artists sitting by the road and dreamily sketching away, bars to grab a drink on the way and even souvenir shops since Montmartre is such a tourist attraction. The walk is worth every calf muscle pain especially with the views from the top.
  6. Shopping is an expensive affair in Paris. If you are from India then you would be happy to know that at least the high end designer lines are slightly cheaper. High street is almost priced similarly but it is great in terms of the variety of brands available and the collections they are displaying at the certain point. There are plenty of indigenous small boutiques but those are definitely more expensive than the high street brands.
  7. A little bit of working knowledge of the language will go a long way. I travelled with my sister who had been to Paris before and I was equipped with the working knowledge of the French language. It makes things like identifying food items (not all places have an english menu and not all who wait on you know english), asking for directions (simple words like left, right, straight), total sum of a bill or in a cab (working knowledge of numbers) a lot simpler. You also deal better with interactions when you have to pronounce a certain word since French pronunciations are extremely convoluted. Besides, lets not forget, a simple 'Merci' (French for Thank you) post a hearty meal will definitely leave you feeling more at home.
  8. Dressing for Paris is a tricky affair. While one way to go about it would be to wear what you are most comfortable in, the other way is to dress like the Europeans. I love European fashion and hence dressing for the weather with ample of layers, oversized coats, gloves, beanies et al was a breeze. Parisian women never over dress and a leather jacket with great pants and boots with an infinity scarf and red lips with no make up is their staple for the ideal French winter.
  9. Moulin Rouge is definitely a must watch simply because of the culture of cabaret that it introduced in all of Europe and the fact that it continues to be a highly entertaining evening spent over some champagne. Some of the acts from the 1800s continue to make their way into the evening still.
  10. This last one is for those who want to relax and just soak in the vibe. Find yourself a nice cafe (there is one literally after every two steps), preferably not near an obvious tourist attraction, pick up a book to read, alternate that with people watching and pet watching since pets are allowed everywhere (including indoors) in France, sip your cafe ou cafe au last (coffee or coffee with milk), grab a smoke with your coffee and croissant (in case tobacco is your thing!) and soak in the culture. Alternatively, you could do this somewhere outside like around the fountain in Jardin du Tuileries and also seek pride in the fact that you're sitting in a very historically significant garden.
If you are still reading, here a few snap shots from my sojourn in Paris.

If you have any questions, doubts or just random experiences to share about Paris, you are more than welcome to drop in a comment and I would love to respond to the best of my knowledge.

Bisous.

Smells like teen spirit

This one is to those '90s girls who grew up on a staple diet of hairy chested rockstars and bandanas to complement their long locks. My memories from my school time remain unmatched as far as my fixation with a new band everyday go. It probably began with God of Rock, Kurt Cobain of 'Nirvana' and it never really ended. It just went from 'Smells like teen spirit' to 'Man who sold the world' as time passed. The allure of a man who wrote best under the influence of love and other drugs is best known to us teenagers who were reeling under the effect of the tunes he belted out.
I don't think Linkin Park was any different. The only difference I would identify in this situation would be that Nirvana did not exactly jump onto the punk rock bandwagon and stuck to its classic rock roots. I would still forever remain indebted to Linkin Park for giving me 'Meteora' for it really put the 15 year old me's life in perspective. True Story.
Besides, credit where credit is due. Nirvana gave me my first real email address on MSN. Yes, it certainly does smell like teen spirit in here.
More about the post, my interpretation of the uber cool Blur Fashion Accessories remains that these accessories do not blindly keep up with the trends. This transition weather has long been on the cards. March end in Delhi never sees such fits of bitter cold winds. But without attempting to sound like the Met guy, I am just going to tell you that I welcomed these hints of the cold before the summer begins, happily. My transition outfit is about effortless style. The kind that I was bowled over by in Paris. The kind that makes you want to take notice, yet not gawk at the put together nature of it all. The kind where a crisp white shirt plays the protagonist and a tan leather jacket plays its faithful sidekick.
Most of my outfits, invariably manage to find a hint of quirk or a dash of madness and my Blur Fashion Accessories sunnies in blue do just that. At different angles the blue acquires a different shade so while at one it camouflaged beautifully into the cerulean wall, the other angle showed it a dark blue. Have you visited the Blur Fashion Accessories online store yet?
After a quick stop at the flower shop, we made a beeline for our shoot location and the result was this melange of all things crisp.

There is a certain charm to finding the larger than life Indian glitz and glamour take form on contemporary and modern shapes. The epitome of weaving this reality happens to be the husband wife designer duo, Falguni Shane Peacock. I have been ardently following their work, not just in the Indian fashion scene but also the niche that they have carved for themselves at a global platform like New York Fashion Week. From bridal couture (as couture stands in India) to luxurious prêt, there wasn't a Falguni & Shane creation that I did not like. Their sensibilities appeal to the Indian fashionistas and international alike because the approach they take towards design is highly unequivocally fun. It is nigh impossible to not appreciate the dynamics of a label that manages to find itself on every pop music icon globally and every Bollywood celebrity, alike.
This time I play favourites and with barely any regrets. This custom made Falguni Shane Peacock jacket is quilted with a clear Falguni & Shane favourite, the baroque print. The glamorous exaggerated sleeves and its front zip detail lend it the perfect form to make it a day wear piece or a party night staple.
A little birdy just told me that starting at 9 a.m. today, the Falguni Shane Peacock store in DLF Emporio, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi is going to witness a massive sale of up to 60% on Peacock Bride and their NYFW Collection. The Delhi bride-to-bes and the fashionistas extraordinaire, this is your calling. Round up the girls and get going today.

Hola Barcelona

Located in South Western Europe, Spain is the textbook definition of the good life. Hell, any tourist guide book could tell you that so let us get to what I could tell you differently from my little Spanish invasion.
We decided to do Barcelona for two primary reasons. First, it is extremely close to Nice. And second, you cannot exactly go to France and not foray into Spain. Almost sinful. So we decided that a sojourn for about three days in Barcelona was in order. Look at this as your guide to 'attempting' to cover Barcelona in three days, four nights. Because lets face it, you will inevitably miss things and will require yet another season of travel to come back to it.
Since we went to Barcelona in the biting cold, you might as well drop hopes of finding bikini photos of me soaking up the sand and the sun. However, I can share with you a few pearls of exploring the city of Barcelona and what not to miss there. Remember, the Catalan capital will not disappoint you on two very important counts: Food and Shopping. The rest as they say is, umm nearly not so important.
  1. A name to look up and learn a thing or two about before you venture into Barcelona is that of 'Antoni Gaudi'. One of the most renowned architects of the city of Barcelona, Gaudi has created most of the masterpieces that you see around in Barcelona. One to not miss amongst many others is the 'La Sagrada Familia' or the house of Jesus. This church is not one to skim over and requires the best of your visual and auditory senses. This church continues to be under construction even post the demise of Gaudi and is a delight for its glass cut work, the detailing along each pillar and the arches at the top and also the sculptures along the outer facade which tell the tales of Jesus. Make sure to book your tickets online. You will be doing yourself the biggest favour.
  2. The 'tapas' experience is as important to your trip to Barcelona as ice to playing ice hockey. No, I mean it. Every place to eat at in Spain gives you the tapas experience. Tapas are essentially small eats. Or appetizers if you may. But what people do in tapas bars is get their pitchers of sangria (yes, the Spanish love their sangria) and order a ton of tapas. The egg and crispy noodles and the cured ham are the ingredients to your ultimate foodgasm experience. Two tapas bars that we visited and could not get enough of were 'La Cervesaria Catalana' and 'Ciudad Condal', both of which are listed in almost every list conceivable of the best tapas bars in Barcelona. The reservations queue could get you in a tizzy but each bite is worth the hour and more long wait.
  3. 'Las Ramblas'. Most travelogues and travel guide books will give you split opinions on this one. The age old schoolers will tell you that this is where its at, while the new age travel gurus might advise you to skip this one. My verdict is that this kilometre and more long stretch of all kinds of little stalls selling you knickknacks that you don't really need and rows of tiny bars on each side selling tapas and cocktails on the go is a must walk. Granted that the fear of pick pockets on this street is legit but also, the entire cultural canopy of Barcelona almost strikes you at Las Ramblas at once.
  4. On Las Ramblas is the entrance to one of the cutest markets in the whole of Barcelona which anyone would tell you. La Boqeria is a public market covered and roofed, with tiny stalls and tables on the inside. Here you can find anything from the world's most wicked chilly ('Habanero') to the local chocolates and candies of Barcelona which you will find people buying by the kilo. Also found here are stalls of 'pintxos' or 'pinchos' which can be over simplified to 'meat on a stick'. We found the dessert version which had strawberries and bananas with frozen nutella on top and helped ourselves to some.
  5. The Port of Barcelona, apart from its obvious commercial importance also has restaurants and a mall right next to it so while the merchants do their business, you should do yours. The crystal clear serene blue sea warrants a walk or two with maybe a beer and a portion of 'paella' which is considered Spain's national dish. We tried the seafood paella (it's basically a rice dish with meat and vegetables) but there are other meat and vegetarian options for those interested. Don't forget to chug a mug or two of San Miguel which is one of the nicest beers in Spain.
Post all of these invigorating activities, shop of course.

A song of Ice and Fire

Have you ever poured into the eyes of a woman in love? Have you ever seen her bare soul as she sings the song of love? Have you seen the eyes of a woman who has tasted freedom? They all look similar. It's a look of intoxication that meets unadulterated delight at a certain unknown point. Her eyes shine bright and there is a song in her step. Her soul is not caged by the shackles of any protocol. She knows not how to regret. She knows love and freedom and the realisation of that combination is gold.

I am not one to diss everything traditional. I am also not one to be a part of the herd and let my voice of fashion drown out. I have always believed in the sublime beauty of 'less is more' as far as my choices in traditional Indian wear hold. But that also comes with a huge soft corner for all kinds of bling. I had the delight of being approached by the wonderful folks at Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers to work on a story for them and to weave it around their delightfully stunning kundan bridal sets. My concept for this luxurious Delhi based jewellery store was simple. A bride invests lacs of Rupees (or thousands of dollars) in her bridal jewellery only to realise that she may never have the opportunity to wear it again. I styled some intensely ornate pieces of jewellery which includes a kundan necklace, jhumkas (earrings) to match, a hathphool (bridal hand jewellery) and a kada (chunky bangle) from the house of SRM Jewellers, with a plain white chiffon saree with a sprinkle of 'mukaish' (silver metallic thread embroidery) and a white beachy camisole which I roughly knotted on one side. This saree was draped over gold sequinned pants as opposed to a petticoat because the concept is to remind every girl that there is always scope for comfort even with a saree. There is always a way to style these timeless pieces of jewellery from Shree Raj Mahal in a way that could be fit for a beach wedding or even a wedding in the woods. Essentially, there is a way out of the conventional heavily embroidered bright coloured clothing to go with this kind of jewellery route.
Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers takes pride in a motto of beauty, purity and trust and it could not be more befitting. They house designs which come together in the most harmonious marriage of traditions with modern designs. For a bride or a bride's maid who believes in jewellery that is versatile and can be dressed up or down, this place has options aplenty.
